Sonora, CA — Republican Senator Dave Cogdill says lawmakers should pass legislation to give incentives to builders that choose to purchase California lumber products, and loosen current regulations affecting the timber industry.
It is disappointing that California’s poor business climate was a top factor in Sierra Pacific Industries’ decision to close two additional sawmills,” says Cogdill. “The closure will cost more than 300 Californians their jobs.”
He adds, “My heart goes out to the families who will suffer due to these mill closures, particularly during these tough economic times. Unfortunately, this is just one more example of California’s red tape forcing businesses to shut their doors.”
The closure of the Standard mill will directly affect 146 employees. Cogdill plans to support legislation going before the Senate this week to extend benefits to jobless workers, but says the legislature’s top priority should be job growth.
Cogdill says he would like to see regulations regarding lumber production reduced in the state and creation of a campaign promoting the sale of California products.
