Police Officer Shoots Pit Bull In Sonora

Sponsored by:

Sonora, Ca — The Sonora Police Department responded to a report of dogs chasing other animals in the area of Saratoga Rd. this morning.

One of the responding officers located two dogs, reportedly Pit Bulls, and followed them to a residence in the 100 block of Banner Dr. The officer parked his vehicle and started walking toward the residence to see if anyone knew who owned the dogs.

As the officer was walking, he was charged by both of the pit bulls. Fearing for his safety, he shot the closest dog, killing it instantly. At this point, the other dog retreated to the rear of the residence.

The incident remains under investigation. According to Lt. Mark Stinson, this is the third incident in the past week that the PD has investigated involving pit bull type dogs. Over the weekend, a pit bull attacked another dog in a Sonora park, killing it.

The PD would like to remind residents that there is a leash law within the city limits of Sonora. Dog owners that are found in violation can be cited.

The owner of the dog shot on Tuesday, Tabitha Hammons, claims that her dog is actually a Boxer mix and not a Pit Bull.
