Calaveras Receives Mosquito Surveillance Grant

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — Calaveras County has secured emergency funds to help combat West Nile Virus.

Brian Moss with the county´s Environmental Management Agency told the Board of Supervisors Tuesday, the department will be receiving $10,000 and is applying for $14,000 more to use in controlling mosquitoes.

The Governor made this emergency money available to local agencies after the fifth human fatality from West Nile Virus in the state this year.

The Governor´s Office says, “The number of people infected this year with West Nile Virus is three times higher than the same time last year.”

The money will be used locally for surveillance, and will pay for labor and mosquito testing material.

Amador County received a $5,000 grant from the emergency funding as well.

West Nile Virus precautions include getting rid of standing water, wearing insect repellent, and staying inside during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
