HRC Food Bank Breaks Ground For New Facility

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — The HRC Food Bank broke ground in San Andreas Thursday afternoon for its new 5,000 square foot food bank.

Director Billie Westernoff says the new 5,000 square foot facility will be almost three times larger than the current food bank. Approximately 10,000 Calaveras County families are serviced by the Food Bank each year. The expansion of the Food Bank will enable HRC to become part of Second Harvest, the nation´s largest charitable hunger-relief organization.

The $450,000 funding for the new food bank and the property came from the Community Development Block Grant in addition to a number of private donors.

According to HRC Executive Director Cathy Bourland the food bank will be the first facility built on eight acres of land located on George Reed Drive. Eventually child care resources, Calaveras Head Start State Preschool and the county´s crisis center will be located on the property.
