Plan To Sell California Land Stirs Controversy
Sacramento, CA– Some people are fighting the proposal against California selling land for school funding.
The Bush Administration formulated the idea to sell off as much as 85,465 acres of national forest to make up for the loss of money after the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self- Determination Act expires on September 30th.
These acts are currently what rural schools rely on for their funding. With the law ending, officials are trying to form a new way to get that money back into the school system.
If the plan goes through officials estimate about $800 million will be gained in profit from the land.
Officials say some people are unhappy with the idea and that the money for school funding should not come from the expense of the wilderness.
