Melones Fills Up For First Day Of Summer, Literally

Sponsored by:

Angels Camp, CA — Wednesday was the first day of summer. Everyone, from families to fishermen, flocked to New Melones Reservoir, which is experiencing its second highest water levels in history.

According to the California Department of Water Resources the water level is a little over 5 feet from the spillway.

Marina Store Manager Kathleen Lowe says the last highest recorded level was in 1998 when the water reached 3 feet below the spillway.

Wednesday water covered the tree line and made access a little closer to the parking lots and picnic tables.

Lowe says there were a good number of people out for the first day of summer. Many of them rented boats. Other visitors trying to escape the heat, just drove right up to the shoreline and jumped in.
