Officials Caution Against Callers Asking For Money For Police

Sonora, CA — Mother Lode residents should be on alert when answering their phones.

The Sonora Police Department is investigating a case of telephone fraud. Reports indicate the caller claimed to be a representative of the Sonora Police Department and told the business owner that he was required by law to donate $195 to the Sonora Police Department.

The caller then demanded the business owner´s bank account information and electronically transferred funds out of the victim´s account. The Sonora Police Department is not soliciting donations from anyone for anything.

At no time should anyone provide personal information such as bank account numbers to anyone or give them money on the Police Department´s behalf.

If anyone receives similar solicitations, please attempt to obtain telephone numbers, if possible using caller ID and notify the Sonora Police Department immediately.
