Last night, the Summerville Bears played a hard-fought game with the visiting Calaveras Red Hawks. Calaveras took the ball on the first drive of the game and went 80 yards on the ground to take a 7-to-0 lead. For the rest of the first half, it was a back-and-forth game with no more scoring. In the third quarter, the Bears were able to tie it up with a ten-yard Bryce Leveroos run. The Red Hawks started another long drive in the third quarter and scored in the fourth to go ahead 13 to 7. The rest of the game was a nightmare for the Bears, as they were flagged for 105 penalty yards, their offense never clicked, and the Red Hawks walked away with a 21-to-7 victory.
The Bear defense did a good job all night, not allowing any chunk plays and making the Red Hawks work hard for every yard gained. The offense, however, was unable to fight through an overwhelming number of major penalty yards. Leveroos rushing for 79 yards and completing a 40-yard pass to Luke Larson turned out to be the bright spots of the entire night.
Owen Herrera had the Hot Hit of the Game with an outstanding tackle in the third quarter and was awarded the Player of the Game for his overall fine defensive play.
The Bears, now 4 and 2 overall and 2 and 1 in league, will travel to Lathrop next week to clash with the River Islands Rip Tide. Calaveras will face Millennium next Friday.
In other football action, Bret Harte was on the road and lost to Big Valley Christian, 26-21. Next Friday, the Bullfrogs are on the road again against the Linden Lions.
