More Bay Bridge Weld Investigations
Attorney General Bill Lockyer´s office has launched an investigation of the Bay Bridge.
The incestigation is related to allegations that defective welds were used in building the new span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
State prosecutors are looking into whether taxpayer funds were paid to contractors as a result of fraud or deceit. Last week the F-B-I announced it was investigating claims that welders were ordered to hide defects and paid cash bonuses for early completion.
The California Department of Transportation and the main contractors have denied the allegations. Both are cooperating with the state and federal investigations. Early tests of a handful of welds have revealed no problems.
