Red Cross Tally For Hurricane Katrina Victims Continues To Rise
Sonora, CA — Red Cross officials are saying the outpouring of generosity for victims of Hurricane Katrina continues.
Local Director Carole Mutzner says her office has brought in at least $150,000 alone. Mutzner says the funds are being put to good use.
She says the Sac-Sierra chapter has administered to 150 families who have relocated to the Sacramento area. She says more than 150 volunteers from the chapter have also traveled to the Gulf Coast.
The chapter has reportedly raised at least $4 million and counting, however Mutzner says there´s probably more because the donations are coming in so fast that Red Cross workers are struggling to process them.
The Sac-Sierra chapter covers nine counties including Tuolumne and Calaveras. More than $120,000 was raised during an eight hour radio-thon by Clarke Broadcasting last week.
Mutzner says on a nationwide level, the group has served more than 7.6 million hot meals and housed more than 200,000 survivors in more than 700 hundred shelters in 24 states.
Anyone wishing to donate can visit the Sac-Sierra Chapter web site.
