Lockeford Gets First Traffic Light

Sponsored by:

The Mother Lode pioneer town of Lockeford has joined the modern world. The town now has it´s first stop light.

The community — just west of the Calaveras County line on the way to Lodi — celebrated Lockeford´s first traffic lights as a milestone in the town´s history, with speakers, dignitaries and about 80 people standing at the corners of the intersection of Highway 88 and Elliot/Tully Road.

A sense of historic significance swept the crowd as some jockeyed for position to be the first ones to walk across the intersection once the signals came on.

Residents believe the signals will benefit downtown merchants, who say the lights should slow passing motorists long enough for them to notice their shops and perhaps visit them.
