Tuolumne, CA — The board of trustees at Summerville Elementary School in Tuolumne is asking voters to consider approving a $3.4 million bond measure during the November General Election.
The money would be spent on campus improvements and cost homeowners in the school district $30 per $100,000 of assessed value.
Money would go to repairs and improvements identified in the school’s Facilities Master Plan. Proposed projects include repairing leaky roofs, replacing deteriorating heating and cooling systems, improving fire alarms (and related systems), and updating aging plumbing, sewer, and electrical lines.
Summerville Elementary School Superintendent Ben Howell says, “I am very pleased with the Board’s decision and commitment to our school. Our wonderful facility has been a foundation for learning for generations in the community of Tuolumne, and we have many needed repairs to ensure the campus is able to engage and inspire learners for generations to come. Our goal is to make sure that we can address many aging needs on our campus, performing essential repairs to ensure our students are learning in clean and safe classrooms.”
Measure C includes required accountability safeguards to ensure the funds would be spent as promised (money could only be used for repairs and facility improvements). By law, all spending would be subject to independent financial and performance audits, as well as oversight by a citizens’ committee. Officials stress that no funds would be used for administrative salaries or pensions.
Summerville Elementary serves students in Transitional Kindergarten – 8th grade. Total enrollment is 489 students.
