Valley Springs, CA — As the recovery from the Gann Fire continues, districts are partnering to provide water to fire-impacted victims.
The Calaveras County Water District (CCWD) and Calaveras Public Utility District (CPUD) are working to provide residents with water as they begin returning to and caring for their properties.
According to the county, CCWD is making approximately 20 250-gallon water totes available to affected residents. The totes are being relocated from the Jenny Lind Water Treatment Plant to the CCWD Main Warehouse at 120 Toma Court, San Andreas.
The current plan is to provide one 250-gallon tote per household, while supplies last. CPUD has a water fill station located off George Reed Drive near Pool Station, adjacent to the CCWD facility. Gann Fire-affected residents may obtain a pre-filled fill-station credit card from the CPUD office at 506 W. St. Charles Street, San Andreas, CA 95249. The card will provide access to the fill station and allow CPUD to track water usage.
Residents may use the CPUD fill station to fill the 250-gallon totes provided by CCWD, their own appropriate water containers, or 55-gallon drums that CPUD can make available to affected residents.
People should be aware that water available through these efforts may be potable or non-potable, depending on the source and intended use. Residents should confirm the type of water available before filling containers and use the water only for its designated purpose.
Due to the size and weight of a full 250-gallon tote, CCWD is also prepared to deliver empty totes to Gann Fire-affected residents, when feasible. Residents receiving a delivered tote will be responsible for obtaining and transporting water from an approved fill station to their property.
For residents who prefer to obtain water from another location, CCWD also has fill sites available at its Copper Cove Water Treatment Plant and Jenny Lind Water Treatment Plant. Residents using these fill sites will need to record and report the applicable meter readings to CCWD so water usage can be properly tracked.
These efforts are intended to provide Gann Fire-affected residents with practical options as they begin the difficult process of cleaning, repairing, and recovering their properties. The partnership between CCWD and CPUD reflects the continued cooperation of local agencies as the community moves forward from the immediate impacts of the fire.
