Cates Competent to Stand Trial

A Stockton man accused of beating his girlfriend to death over a year ago has been found mentally competent to stand trial in Calaveras County. Prosecutors say 42 year old Jay Edward Cates killed Keri Rasberry in the fall of 2001.
Judge John Martin set an April 9th trial date for Cates, who´s being held in the Calaveras County Jail on $750,000 bail. An attorney for Cates says most of the evidence against his client is circumstantial.
Authorities say Rasberry was Cates´ girlfriend. Rasberry´s family says they were only acquaintances
