Governor Davis is calling on Republican opponent Bill Simon to withdraw from the governor’s race.
Simon concedes his allegation that Davis illegally accepted a campaign check inside the state Capitol is, as the businessman puts it, “now in question.” But Simon defends himself for making the claim, based on now-discredited photographs and a letter released by a group allied with Simon. He says in a statement that he had no reason to question the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs´ good faith belief in their charge against the governor.
The governor said on radio in San Francisco today that Simon, as a former prosecutor, should be embarrassed. And, as Davis put it, “…if he had any sense of honor, he would drop out of the race.”
