CHP Hopes For Safe School Year

Sponsored by:

Sonora, Ca — The CHP is asking residents to keep an eye out for young children who are heading to and from school.

?Young children really get excited when they see the school bus coming,? says Officer Tom Wills. ?They know the driver by now, and sometimes they can run a little late and run out because they don´t want to miss the bus.?

Wills says that during the summer months, drivers become accustomed to traveling through school zones without children present. Now that schools are back in session, drivers must remember that the speed limit in a school zone where children are present is 25 mph.

Once a school bus activates the flashing red lights, traffic in both directions are required to stop until the lights are turned off. The red lights are an indication that the bus driver could be escorting the children across the roadway.
