Bridge Jumper was War Protestor
Authorities say they have no plans to close pedestrian walkways on the Golden Gate Bridge after a man criticized plans for war in Iraq and then jumped to his death.
Earlier, officials said the man was not a war protester.
The man climbed to the edge of the span yesterday. Authorities were at the scene within a minute, and Coast Guard boats and a San Francisco police vessel quickly arrived beneath the bridge. Authorities spent half an hour trying to persuade the man to leave his perch. But officials say the man ignored them, read a statement of protest over the impending conflict in the Middle East — and then jumped to the water below.
