Full Containment On Peak Fire As Suppression Repairs Get Underway
Sonora, CA — The US Forest Service reports that 100% containment has been reached on the 316-acre Peak Fire that ignited on October 2 near Herring Creek in the Stanislaus National Forest.
The Incident Command team, led by Justin Franklin, reports that firefighters are now transitioning to “suppression repair” while also remaining diligent in looking for hotspots.
Adding, “Crews will continue mopping up on the interior of the burned area, adding water on any smoldering stump holes and down trees whenever it is safe to do so. Weakened trees and snags continue to be a concern for firefighter safety. We greatly appreciate the public’s help and understanding by abiding by the Forest Closure Order.”
The closure order took effect on October 11 and restricts access to Herring Creek and Hammill Canyon Loop. It will remain in place through December 5. Light precipitation, and high winds, are anticipated in the fire area later this week.
There are still 81 firefighters assigned to the incident, four engines, two water tenders, two excavators, and a dozer.
The cause of the fire, situated outside of Pinecrest, is under investigation.
