Emergency Alert Will Be Sent To Cell Phones
Sonora, CA — Local emergency officials are alerting residents to refrain from being alarmed if you hear an alert on your cell phone at around 11:20 this morning.
It is the first ever national Presidential-level Wireless Emergency Alert Test, and it will help determine whether any improvements need to be made to the system. Administrative Analyst with the Tuolumne County Office of Emergency Services, Jason Terry, notes that it is being conducted by FEMA and there is no way of opting out of it.
A similar emergency message will be sent out over radio and television stations, which has been the more traditional way to send out emergency alerts. If you have a smart phone, be aware of it. The alert should read, “This is a test of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
