A Boost For A Tribal Library

Tuolumne, County, CA — The Tuolumne band of Me-Wuk Indians is getting about $7,000 to support library operations and maintain services. The funds come from the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ Native American Library Services.

This year the Institute is awarding 235 grants serving 242 tribes for a total $1,666,000. Other grant recipients in our area include Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians in Coarsegold, CA and North fork Rancheria of Mono Indians in North Fork, CA.

U.S. Representative, Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) who pushed for the funds says “Maintaining our local tribal libraries is critical in ensuring the educational and cultural preservation of their communities.”

The eligible entities for this program are Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages, regional corporations and village corporations.

Basic Grants are in the amount of $6,000, with an additional $1,000 for an Education/Assessment Option.
