UC Regents Set To Make Bid Decision On Lab Contract

Sponsored by:

Berkeley, CA — University of California regents face a big decision this week: Compete for the management contract of the Los Alamos nuclear weapons lab or walk away from the atomic birthplace.

A committee of U-C´s governing Board of Regents will recommend whether or not to compete tomorrow and the full board will vote on that recommendation Thursday.

U-C has run the Los Alamos lab in New Mexico for the government since it was founded in 1943.

U-C also manages the Lawrence Livermore nuclear weapons lab in Northern California.

The university´s performance as nuclear steward came under attack after a series of fiscal and security lapses at Los Alamos.
