Citizens’ Initiative Forming To Explore Revenue Measures Following Station 56 Vote

Sonora, CA — A group is investigating ways to fund additional fire services in Tuolumne County following the vote last week to close the Mono Vista Fire Station.

The board of supervisors voted 3-2 to amend the existing CAL Fire contract due to budget constraints, a move that will essentially cut Station 56.

Mat Galvan, who is spearheading a potential citizens’ initiative, launched a community survey to explore what types of revenue measures are most desirable, and over 300 people have taken part so far.

He provided an update at this week’s board of supervisors meeting during the public comment period.

Galvan noted that after previous tax proposals (Measure X in 2022 and Z in 2024) both failed, the plan is to do things differently this time. He notes, “Before circulating any petition or filing any measure, we’re asking the community what they’ll actually back. The early signal is encouraging — more than five different revenue measures are currently clearing 60% support among the people who have responded. The community appears open to the right structure. We just want to make sure we file the right one.”

The survey is open now through late in the evening on May 7. Eight different options are presented.
