Lake Tulloch Drowning Victim Identified

Copperopolis, CA – The Calaveras County Coroner’s Office has identified the 31-year-old Campbell man who drowned while swimming in Lake Tulloch on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased is Jose Bonilla, who sheriff’s officials say was not using a floating device. As we reported here on Monday, after receiving reports of a probable drowning, Calaveras County sheriff’s officers arrived around 1:08 p.m. at the scene in the 900 block of Foothill Road. Witnesses reported that Bonilla struggled to stay afloat after swimming out near an island about 90 feet offshore, then sank beneath the surface.

Deputies and the victim’s companions launched an immediate search of the area where he had last been seen. Sadly, Bonilla’s body was found at a depth of roughly 28 feet by the Sheriff’s Office’s underwater remotely controlled vehicle at 4 p.m.
