Assembly OK´s Some Special Fees
The state Assembly has approved bills allowing San Francisco and San Mateo County to charge motorists annual vehicle fees. A bill by Assemblyman Leland Yee of San Francisco would allow the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to impose an unspecified fee on the approximately 442,000 motor vehicles registered in the city to pay for street and highway improvements and maintenance. It was sent to the Senate yesterday by a 42-33 vote.
The other bill is by Assemblyman Joe Simitian of Palo Alto. It would authorize the City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County to levy a fee of up to $4 a year on vehicles registered in the county to relieve traffic congestion and deal with stormwater pollution. It cleared the Assembly on a 41-34 vote and was sent to the Senate.
