Sacramento School Shooting Could Have Been Worse
Police say they averted a possible much more serious incident this morning when they shot a teenager at a Sacramento high school after he took a school administrator hostage.
Police say 19-year-old Mario Rodriguez was in critical condition after he was shot in the shoulder by police. The administrator — whom police would not identify — was being treated for a non-life-threatening wound to the leg. Authorities say Rodriguez was armed with a shotgun and realistic looking replica handgun when he came onto the Rio Cazadero High School campus just before 9 a.m.
He was shot by police who had beefed up patrols at area high schools Tuesday, after 15-year-old Roberto Treadway was fatally shot during an argument a block from another Sacramento high school moments after classes let out for the day.
Rio Cazadero is an alternative high school for about 280 students in south Sacramento.
