Recent Fires Prompt Warnings About Discarded Ashes And Chimneys

Rancho Calaveras, CA — With the temperatures cooling, more and more people are using wood-fired stoves and fireplaces.
On Sunday, the Calaveras Consolidated Fire Department responded to a small vegetation fire in Rancho Calaveras caused by discarded fireplace ashes (see photo).
The fire department reports that it is important to keep completely cooled ashes in a covered metal container (placed at least 10 feet away from structures). Also, never discard ashes in dry vegetation, or in plastic garbage cans, or cardboard boxes.
The fire department has also responded to some chimney fires, recently, including one late last week on Toreno Way in Burson.
The department adds, “A reminder to everyone who owns a home with a fireplace to have it annually inspected and cleaned by a licensed chimney sweep service. Clean chimneys don’t catch fire. Additionally, the sweep service professional may have specific maintenance recommendations depending on how you use your fireplace or stove.”
