California´s secretary of state estimates voter turnout in the recall election between 65 and 70 percent. If the prediction proves accurate, the vote could nearly rival the 71 percent turnout of the November 2000 presidential election and be the largest for a gubernatorial election in California since 1982.
California´s record turnout was 88.4 percent in the 1964 presidential election.
Secretary of State Kevin Shelley also says it was one of the smoothest statewide elections in 20 years.
Some of the few reported glitches involved absentee ballots. In Alameda County, computer problems delayed the tallying of 90,000 ballots. A county spokeswoman says optical scanners were improperly reading the results.
