San Andreas, CA — Calaveras County Sheriff Rachelle Whiting addressed the board of supervisors this week following the arrests of two San Andreas residents after several livestock were killed by dogs that were allowed to roam free.

Whiting started by praising the work of Calaveras Animal Services, a partner in the case. She said, “They are working short-staffed with limited resources, and they are actually working on a number (of other) investigations stemming from irresponsible pet owners.”

Whiting said that while Calaveras County does not have a leash law, the county’s Title 6 ordinance lays out rules related to animals.

She says, “This includes responsible pet ownership, requiring dog licenses, addressing nuisance barking, prohibiting abandonment, and prohibiting dogs from running at large.”

The latter prevents dogs from leaving the property and trespassing on another property without consent.

Sheriff Whiting added, “Most of the charges are infractions in our ordinance, but they can escalate to misdemeanors, especially for some of these ongoing problems.”

She concluded, “Please, everyone, for public safety, and the quality of life for your neighbors, exercise responsible pet ownership.”
